Here’s something really nice: Engineering professor Jean Hutchinson is Head of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering here at Queen’s. She earned the Excellence in Education Award this year from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science for her innovative work on GEOE410, the Geological Engineering Field School course. In it, Dr Hutchinson arranges for students to visit working engineers at various stages of their careers at job sites across Northern Ontario to learn about applications of Geological Engineering within the mining cycle.

“It was really a nice surprise to me,” says Hutchinson. “As Head of the Department, I’m usually suggesting other people get put forward for awards, and it was fantastic to receive this one because of a course that I feel very strongly about. It’s outside the normal type of teaching that we can do on campus and it’s really about professional education of our students in the field and learning about what it means to work in geological engineering into the future.”
