PHOTOS: Fall Convocation

Here’s a very nice story from Fall Convocation held earlier today. From left in the above picture is Dr. Tim Topper who is a Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Next to him is his grandson, Dr. Kenneth Lockwood, who just completed his PhD in Civil Engineering here at Queen’s. Next to Kenneth is his mother, Dr. Anne Topper, who is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics, and Astronomy at Queen’s. Kenneth’s father, Anne’s husband, is the late Professor and Head of the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics, and Astronomy at Queen’s, Dr. Geoff Lockwood. Next to Anne in the photo is Queen’s Civil Engineering Professor, Dr. Ana Maria da Silva, who was Kenneth’s PhD supervisor.

Dr. Anne Topper hooded her son, Dr. Kenneth Lockwood, at today’s convocation ceremony in Grant Hall. With Dr. Tim Topper looking on, that’s three generations, four members of the same family, with PhDs in engineering.

“Well, it’s one of those things: you start in Kindergarten and you never think this is going to happen but we’re all really proud of him," says Dr. Anne Topper. "He has done a lot of hard work. Engineering, as we all know, is not an easy program, so I’m very proud of him.”

“It’s a huge relief,” says the newly minted Dr. Kenneth Lockwood. “It’s been a long journey.”

Congratulations Dr. Lockwood, and everyone else who graduated at today's ceremony.
