Queen’s Engineering Debuts Robust Series of Wellness Workshops Starting this Fall

Queen’s Engineering is renewing its commitment to the health and well-being of its students in a new way by hosting a week of wellness workshops each month from October – December (Fall 2020) and February to April (Winter 2021).

“Even in March, we could tell this was going to be an exceptional school year,” says Stacy Shane, Manager of Student Services at Queens’ Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. “Starting in the spring, and working through the summer, we began looking at options to best support our students through the school year as they contend with some exceptional stresses – remote learning, new ways of working, and, of course, dealing with the general anxiety that comes with a global pandemic.”

Each of the thirty 30-minute virtual workshops are categorized under a specific theme – Graphic Design, Communication, Stress Relief, Exercise and Food and Nutrition – with the mission to help engineering students practice self-care and achieve optimal health, well-being and personal success.

“Even in the early planning stages, it became clear that ‘wellness’ encompasses a lot more than what we conventionally think of as stress relief,” says Kendy Sandy, Events Coordinator for the faculty, who assembled the program. “The larger goal is to create a strong, resilient, healthy environment upon which the Queen’s Engineering community can thrive and develop a lifetime of value. Workshop topics were based on a survey of new and returning engineering students, and we expanded our offerings into all sorts of interesting areas.”

“We are bringing in external experts to lead these sessions – professionals in their fields, who are excited and eager to share what they know with our students.”
