Exclusively for engineering students, Mitchell Hall study rooms are now available for use

Posted on December 09, 2020

A supersized classroom on the second floor of Mitchell Hall has received institutional approval for exclusive use by engineering students as a study space.

The retractable dividers between rooms 215, 225, and 235 in Mitchell Hall were designed to accommodate hundreds of students, and was put to use last year for a number of first-year sections upon the opening of the building. The rooms have been unavailable since the middle of March, though the building and many of its services—Starbucks, the wellness centre, the COVID-19 assessment centre—remain open to the public (by appointment, in many cases).

Most of the campus, in fact, was unavailable for student use until midway through the fall term when the library and student-facing spaces at Mackintosh-Corry Hall were approved to open for use. Available to all students, those locations saw great demand and were deemed manageable for safety regarding COVID-19. The Mitchell Hall rooms, property of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, received approval to open this week.

Access to the study space is overseen by iCons, the student-operated organization that maintains a similar space in the Integrated Learning Centre/Beamish-Munro Hall. The ILC/Beamish-Munro Hall remains unavailable to students/faculty/staff without an appointment and advance approval for each visit.

The study spaces will be disinfected between reservations by iCons staff and the rooms will be cleaned daily by Physical Plant Services, as usual.

There are rules. Students must:

  • reserve their space via the Dibs service. No drop ins will be honoured.
  • receive clearance from the SeQure App for COVID self-screening of symptoms and travel history
  • be escorted to their assigned seat by an iCons staff member
  • follow the blue arrows on the floor identifying approved traffic flow
  • not bring food. Only non-alcoholic drinks are allowed
  • wear a mask at all times except when physically drinking (no exemptions)

The rooms are open through December 19 and will reopen in the Winter term on January 18.
