September 30 will mark the second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. This is an important day, and we encourage the Queen's Engineering community to use it as an opportunity for reflection on how we can all support the cause of reconciliation in Canada.
Regularly scheduled engineering classes will be cancelled after 12:30 pm on September 30 to enable students to attend public university-scheduled events or to reflect on the meaning of this day individually.
Shirts: We encourage community members to wear orange shirts on September 30. Queen’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives will be distributing shirts to students on campus; watch your email for notices about how to pick them up. You can also wear an orange shirt you already own; there is no need for it to be an “official” shirt to be a meaningful gesture on the day.
Pins: The Engineering faculty has ordered pins from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, which can also be worn leading up to and on September 30. They are available at our Student Services office on the third floor of Beamish-Munro Hall.
On-campus posters / digital screens: We are creating and will put up posters across our Engineering buildings on September 26 through 30, with reflections on how people can advance the cause of reconciliation in Canada. These will be physical posters, but also shared on some of our digital screens.
The posters will include an invitation to participate in sharing your personal reflections on how you can contribute to reconciliation. Please take a moment to do so – some of these reflections, as well as our posters, will be shared on social media through the day on September 30.
Other on-campus events and resources: Queen’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives has many more resources, as well as a schedule of events, on their website. You are invited to review these and participate in activities that will help you learn about, engage in, and advance reconciliation both on and off campus.
