Orientation events for incoming engineering students at Queen’s is coordinated each year by the student-led Engineering Society. According to the website, “Orientation Week is a fun-filled week designed to introduce incoming Applied Science students to the ‘renowned spirit and unrivaled excellence’ Queen’s Engineering & Applied Science is known for.”
The orientation “week” this year took place over two weekends in early September and, after two years of COVID-related restrictions, those two weekends included the welcome return of familiar long-time Queen’s Engineering favourites.

Throughout the week, incoming students are introduced to the Queen’s campus, the Faculty of Engineering & Applied Science, the Engineering Society, and the surrounding Kingston community. Devoted Orientation Leaders, FRECs, lead the incoming students through a variety of activities that test the creativity, teamwork, and enthusiasm of the incoming class. Incoming students are immersed in the skills, traditions, and sense of community that make Queen’s Engineering & Applied Science stand apart. Events are planned throughout the year, and the whole week is entirely student organized by an organizing body known as FREC Committee.
Even if you choose not to participate actively, there is lots to see at each event and many people to meet along the way. Each student will have exposure to a devoted group of FRECs, the EngSoc Executive, the Alma-Mater Society, and the Faculty throughout the week. Incoming students will be exposed to clubs and activities, engineering design teams, and on-campus services. Incoming students take what they learn during Orientation Week and apply it to the many diverse situations they will encounter in their post-secondary career.
