This past week, the Chemical Institute for Canada (CIC) Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE) held the Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference (CCEC) from October 23-26th in Vancouver, Canada, hosted by the University of British Columbia. CCEC returned to an in-person event after virtual conferences were held in 2020 and 2021 due to the global pandemic. CCEC is the premier conference for chemical engineers and the only event with a focus on Canadian chemical engineering.
Among Department of Chemical Engineering Faculty, Dr. Martin Guay, Dr. Marianna Kontopoulou, Dr. Cao Thang Dinh, Dr. Michael Cunningham, Dr. Nicolas Hudon, and Dr. Kim McAuley gave talks. Dr. Kontopoulou (“Thermoplastic formulations for additive manufacturing”) and Dr. Guay (“Data-driven control of unknown nonlinear systems using extremum seeking control”) gave invited talks in a symposium set up by the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering. Dr. Dinh gave an invited talk in a special Voices of the Future of Chemical Engineering session on “Electrosynthesis of Renewable Fuels and Chemicals”.
Michael Cunningham gave an invited talk “Two routes to designing sustainable polymeric materials: CO2-responsive polymers and graft modified bio-sourced nanoparticles,” as part of the Macromolecular Science and Engineering Division Award he won earlier this year. This award is presented to an individual who, while residing in Canada, has made a distinguished contribution to macromolecular science or engineering.
PhD student, Steacy Coombs (supervised by Dr. Jeffrey Giacomin), gave a talk, “Macromolecular Branching from General Rigid Bead-Rod Theory”, as part of the CSChE Best Master’s Thesis Award she won earlier this year. Several other graduate students and postdoctoral fellows gave oral and poster presentations including students of Dr. Dinh (Cornelius Obasanjo), Dr. Kontopoulou (Haritha Haridas and Mohamed Wahbi), Dr. Cunningham (Olga Lidia Torres-Rocha, Sandra Smeltzer, Connor Sanders, Arthur Werner, and Amanda Rigg), and Dr. McAuley (Kaveh Abdi and Lauren Gibson).
