Congratulations to PhD candidate, Sandra Smeltzer, who is one of six Queen’s students to receive a 2022 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. Named after Major-General Georges P. Vanier, the first francophone Governor General of Canada, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Program helps Canadian institutions attract highly qualified doctoral students. These awards are based on academic excellence, research potential and leadership and are valued at $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies. Only up to 166 scholarships are awarded annually. It is considered Canada’s “most prestigious award for doctoral candidates.”

Sandra is a PhD candidate in Dr. Michael Cunningham’s lab. Her research “Structure-Property Relationships of Block-Random Copolymers for Use as Stabilizers in Emulsion Polymerization” is focused on developing environmentally responsible alternatives to high-performance coating production. Sandra is the fouth graduate student from the Department of Chemical Engineering in the last 7 years to receive a Vanier Scholarship.
