Complement your advanced diploma with an accredited engineering degree from Queen’s University.

This efficient pathway supports a transition into the upper years of one of two Queen’s programs: Civil Engineering or Mining Engineering.

This diploma-to-degree pathway is faster and more cost-effective than pursuing a standalone engineering degree. It provides the academic requirements for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng), a designation that can enhance your career prospects.

Who can participate

This pathway is open to the following applicants:

  • Current Engineering Technology diploma students who have completed at least three semesters and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 70%.
  • Graduates of an Engineering Technology program who earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 70%.

  • Develop a robust combination of technical and theoretical knowledge and skills in a supportive and diverse learning environment.
  • Receive a state-of-the art education at a globally distinguished engineering faculty with Canada’s highest engineering undergraduate completion rate.
  • Through an optional paid full-time internship, gain valuable professional experience and learn about current engineering practices, advances and technologies.
  • Complete the academic requirement for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng), a credential that is highly valued by engineering employers.
  • Open doors to more diverse, lucrative and senior-level engineering employment opportunities.

How it works

The Queen’s Engineering Bridge features two phases of academic upgrading to bridge the gap between your college diploma and a Queen’s Engineering program.

Preparatory Courses (online)

Students participate in eight months of online prerequisite courses to gain essential academic knowledge in areas such as linear algebra or physics. Current diploma students complete these courses concurrently with their final year of studies.

You will have access to tutoring and online peer discussion groups to help you successfully complete these courses. Prospective students must achieve a minimum of 70% in each course to proceed to the Summer Bridge.


Summer Bridge (in-person)

Directly following the Preparatory Courses, you will take part in an in-person summer semester at Queen’s University. In this semester, you will complete the necessary foundational curriculum required to succeed in your upper-year engineering classes.

The Summer Bridge is also your opportunity to become familiar with the wide range of services and facilities on campus. Connect with peers in your cohort, and start building a network that will become vital to your professional growth.


Program Completion (in-person)

Upon successfully completing the Preparatory Courses and Summer Bridge, you will progress into your chosen Queen’s Engineering degree program.

Joining your engineering cohort in the fall semester, you will be assigned an academic advisor who will help you navigate course requirements and organize your academic schedule. Phase 3 time to completion is expected to be two years (excluding optional internship) and may vary for each individual student.

As a Queen’s student, you will have access to a wide range of student supports in areas such as academics, wellness, administration, technology and housing.

To help you acclimate to university, the Queen’s Engineering Bridge provides comprehensive supports throughout phases one and two, including:

  • academic, wellness and administrative guidance
  • opportunities to connect with other pathway students
  • mentorship by a current Queen’s Engineering student

All students in Queen’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science also have access a broad range of support services.

How to apply

You can apply to the Queen’s Engineering Bridge pathway online from June 1 – August 1.

When completing your application, follow these seven steps:

  1. Under External Applicant, select Engineering Bridge

    applicant type
  2. Select Non-Degree Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science

  3. Select your chosen engineering discipline: Applied Science Engineering Bridge (Civil Engineering OR Mining Engineering)
  4. Select Part Time
  5. Select start date
  6. Fill out the rest of the application
  7. Enter payment for the $100 application fee

You will receive an email acknowledgement of your application within 4 to 8 days. You will be notified of the admission decision by the end of August before the pathway begins.

Q: Where can I stay on campus while completing the Summer Bridge?

A: You can choose to stay in Residence at Queen’s, or sublet local housing, which is readily available during the summer months. Learn more about the university’s range of accommodations.

Q: Once I join my chosen engineering program at Queen’s, which support services will be available to me?

A: Queen’s Engineering students have access to a broad range of support services:

  • Academics: student success guidance, peer mentoring, academic advising, tutoring, workshops, writing support through EngLinks and other services
  • Wellness: counselling, programs and resources are accessible to provide social and emotional support
  • Technology: Engineering IT can help you with technical or connectivity issues
  • Finances: guidance and options for paying fees and accessing food and textbooks
  • Housing: help dealing with issues relating to roommate conflict, housing conditions, safety, landlords (off campus)

Q: Outside the classroom, how can I expand my engineering knowledge, skills and contacts?

A: The Engineering Society of Queen’s University offers a diverse range of opportunities for engineering students to participate in or help plan engineering competitions, contribute to real-world engineering design projects, gain global experience, make new friends, serve their communities, and advance social and environmental progress.

A: Queen’s Engineering recently launched Engineering for Everyone, an approach to equity, diversity and inclusion that provides a roadmap for greater inclusion at Queen’s Engineering – leading to a more diverse and representative engineering profession to better serve society.
